Choosing the right Squash Racquet

Choosing the right squash racquet or (squash racket) if your prefer for you.

The right squash racket can make or break your squash game, factors like grip size, head size, string tension, racket swing and flex style all help to determine which type of racquet will offer the most ideal power and control for your squash game.

Beginner and Senior players a like will benefit from intermediate rackets that have larger heads and bigger sweet spots. Providing more power and forgiveness. Having a racquet that provides these two attributes will allow a player to concentrate on the rally, their positioning and form.

Intermediate Players

Intermediate players will find success with both intermediate and advanced rackets. Intermediate rackets typically have previously been balanced more to the front of the head of the squash racquet, we are now seeing the new models to have a balance towards the butt of the racket. "Head Light"

Advanced Players

A racquet that is more head light is usually best suited for a more seasoned squash player. Rackets with head light frames can be commonly be classed as intermediate to advanced racquets. These rackets tend to lighter and offer more flexibility for better ball control.

String Tension

The amount of tension in strings can greatly affect how a racquet plays. Some strings are designed to assist with more power and or control. Higher tensions produce less power than lower tensions although can benefit a players from court game.

String

Some strings have different shapes and textures to grip the ball better. This can help with your drop shots and lobs. We suggest you experiment with different strings and tensions to see what works better for your game.

Squash Grip

If a grip is too big or too small this can cause strain or fatigue on the hand and arm. To properly fit a squash grip to your hand the general rule is to have one fingers width of space between the palm and the tip of the ring finger.

Do not forget to replace worn out grips with fresh grip, or put an over grip on for optimal comfort and control, this will prevent slipping and provide size to the grip for more comfort.

The first step to court domination is equipping squash gear that matches your style and level of play.

DIMENSIONS OF A SQUASH RACKET

The dimensions of squash racquets or rackets if you prefer, are specified by the World Squash Federation. When looking for a squash racket it is safe to say that all squash rackets will be equal in length. There may be minor variations between different racquet models and brands but very little. The major variations are focused on the weight of the racket and the dimensions of the head, and throat of the racquet. String patterns take a part in how the ball feels when striking the ball. Each brand and model that are similar may have slight variations that can affect ones game play. When looking for a new racket bare in mind the subtle differences between each racket. Compare the racquet specifications and do not always assume price is the major player in a racquet. You may be surprised how some racquets feel and play without you having to break the bank. Bellow are the specifications outlined by the WSF. This will give you a better understanding of the manufacturing of a racquet.

CONSTRUCTION

The head of the squash racket is defined as that part of the racket containing or surrounding the strung area.

Strings and string ends must be recessed within the racquet head or, in cases where such recessing is impractical because of racquet material, or design, must be protected by a securely attached bumper strip.

If squash manufacturers' logos or other markings are applied to the strings they shall not leave a colored mark on the squash ball.

The bumper strip must be made of a flexible material which cannot crease into sharp edges following abrasive contact with the floor or walls.

The bumper strip shall be of a white, colorless or unpigmented material. Where for cosmetic reasons a squash manufacturer chooses to use a colored bumper strip, then cannot leave a colored deposit on the walls or floor of the court after contact.

The frame of the racket shall be of a color and/or material which will not mark the walls or floor following an impact in normal play.

Strings shall be gut, nylon or a substitute material, provided metal is not used.

Only two layers of strings are allowed and these must be alternately interlaced or bonded where they cross, and the string pattern shall be generally uniform and form a single plane over the racquet head.

Any grommets, string spacers or other devices attached to any part of the racket shall be used solely to limit or prevent wear and tear or vibration, and be reasonable in size and placement for such purpose. They cannot be attached to any part of the strings within the hitting area (defined as the area formed by overlapping strings).

The total racket construction including the head shall be symmetrical about the center of the racket in a line drawn vertically through the head and shaft and when viewed face on.

How To Choose a Squash Racket

It can be a very daunting task when it comes to choosing a squash racket as there are so many brands, head size, weight, strings, string patterns and stiffness. Even for the very best of players it can be a difficult task. Here at Racquet Source we have tried our best to make it easier for you to choose a racket.

Beam

The beam width of squash rackets are generally between 16&21mm. Thin beams are for skilled players whereas the thicker beams are for less skilled players.

Grip

All squash rackets have the same grip size new. There are a few ways to build the grip up to the correct size for you.
  1. Replacement grips which is what all rackets come with. These should only be used as the first grip and not on top of another grip.

  2. Thin replacement grips: This can be put on top of the replacement grip. This will make it quite a bit thicker!
  3. Overgrips: which go over the replacement grips, and thin replacement grips.

Balance

The balance of a racket is very personal, some people like a head heavy racket and some players like an evenly balanced racket. A head heavy racket will give the racket more power.

Throat

There are two types of throats, open and closed. A closed throat racket will have a smaller string bed, decreasing the size of the sweet spot.
An open throat racket has a larger string bed, which is more forgiving on off-center shots as the racket will have a large sweet spot.

Strings & Stringing Tension

There are 3 different types of string:

  1. Natural Gut: This string is what most professional players play with, it plays the best with the best feel, it also comes with a high price tag.

  2. Multifilament: Also known as synthetic gut, this is the most popular string as it plays well, similarly to natural gut, but last longer.
  3. Monofilament: This is used by players who break strings regularly as it is a very tough string. But it comes with its downsides as well, there is less feel and comfort. These are mainly used as the main strings with a synthetic gut across.

Grommet Holes

They are used for strings to be threaded through. Prince and Wilson have made rackets with larger holes; these allow the strings to have more freedom to move, thus increasing the size of the sweet spot.

Weight

Squash rackets vary in weight between 110g & 160g. Lighter weight rackets are for people who have a slow swing speeds as it will aid in generating power. Heavy racket are for players who have a fast swing speed, the weight will help to control the ball.
